Ana Lila Downs Sánchez is a Mexican singer, songwriter and actress. She performs her own compositions and works of others in a number of genres, as well as exploiting traditional and popular Mexican music. She also incorporates native Mexican influences and has recorded songs in multiple indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, Nahuatl and Purépecha. Born and raised in Oaxaca, she mainly studied at the Oaxaca Academy of the Arts and briefly attended the University of Minnesota, before retiring to focus on her music career. She soon started performing on the traditional music of the city of Oaxaca. Her first album, Ofrenda, was released in 1994. In 1999, Downs rose to fame with his first studio album, La Sandunga, which was a critical and commercial success. She achieved international success in 2001 with her album Border, which emerged on the Mexican and Latin American music scene in the early 2000s
